This ancient craft of hand-blocking in India is so incredible, we wanted to share the process with you so you fully understand the art and time that goes into each unique item.
It takes a team of two printers one full day to print enough fabric for four queen size quilts!
THE AMAZING PROCESS:
First, the blocks must be carved. Each color and pattern requires a new block and are all carved by hand. It takes one full week for a block maker to carve the nine blocks for the Blue Lotus Quilt.
The unique colors are hand mixed to create beautiful vibrant shades. These colors are derived from minerals, plants and Azo-free dyes.
Next, a skilled craftsman dips the carved block into the dye and stamps it onto the fabric. Once the first color has dried the process is repeated with each color.
The Blue Lotus Queen Quilt requires more than 1250 stamps to cover both sides. It takes a team of two printers one full day to print enough fabric for four queen size quilts.
Each queen quilt requires about six hours of washing, setting the dye and drying the fabric. This prevents the fabric from shrinking and makes the dye completely colorfast.
Once this process is complete, it then takes an experienced quilter a full day just to place the organic cotton filling and hand stitch one quilt. A truly remarkable process by skilled artisans and such a wonderful ancient craft that we all get to benefit from!
